Controlling Lawn Weeds

A thick, healthy lawn is the best defense against lawn weeds. But even a great lawn can suffer from an invasion of weeds. Seeds can blow in from neighbouring lawns, fields or unkempt municipal property. Some weed can cause a real nuisance, whether they trigger allergic reactions, increase knee and ankle injuries when playing, are prickly to step on or just plain unsightly. If weeds are left unchecked, they will spread across the lawn, becoming more difficult to control.

Broadleaf lawn weeds such as dandelions, plantain, clover, chickweed, creeping charlie can be controlled using a selective herbicide available in weed & feed products or in Lawn WeedOut™; they will not harm the lawn.

Weed control products are available in many forms, the following guide should help you determine which product is best suit for you.

If there are only a few weeds scattered about the lawn you can dig them out by hand or use WeedOut Ready-To-Use.

If weeds are infesting only certain parts of your lawn use WeedOut Attach & Spray or Concentrate (with Select-a-Spray hose-end sprayer or pressure sprayer) and just spray the weeds.

If weeds are infesting most of the lawn you can use a combination fertilizer and weed control product like Vigoro Weed & Feed or if fertilizer is not required at the time use WeedOut Attach & Spray or Concentrate and treat the entire lawn.

Controlling lawn weeds is relatively easy, there are a few points to keep in mind to achieve the best result from these products.

Lawn Weed control products will only control broadleaf weeds that are actively growing (they do not prevent weeds). This is usually May, June and September.

Temperatures should be above 15°C during the day and 5°C at night. Weeds are not actively growing during cool temperatures (even if they are in flower).

Do not apply when temperatures are above 27°C (weeds go into a semi-dormancy during hot, dry conditions).

Do not spray during windy conditions.

Some hard to control weeds such as clover, creeping charlie, chickweed, etc (weeds with small leaves) may require a second application about 10 days later.

Apply granular products to a wet lawn (morning dew is usually sufficient).

Do not apply when rain is forecast in the next 24 hours.

Do not mow the lawn for 48 hours after applying.

Do not apply lawn weed killers to newly seeded areas until after the third mowing.

Do not seed areas that have been treated for 6 weeks.

Keep children and pets off the lawn until it has thoroughly dried.
